10th -12th Grade Summer Reading
10th -12th Grade Summer Reading Assignment
08/01/2019
For the 2019-2020 school year, all students will be required to participate in summer reading. The summer reading assignments are listed below. All summer reading assignments should be completed by the first day of school which is WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 07, 2019. Summer reading will be 5% of each student’s grade, so failing to complete the assignment can be harmful to a student’s grade. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the school over the summer. Upper-class (10-12) English Students: All students taking 10th-12th grade English in the academy will need to complete SIX Newsela assignments from the Newsela Summer Reading Challenge. These articles will be located under the COLLECTIONS tab at the top of the Newsela homepage. Make sure you are looking at the High School Summer Reading Challenge. For each assignment, the student must 1. read the Newsela article, 2. complete the multiple choice quiz, 3. and complete the written response, 4. making use of the annotating feature to highlight support for their written responses. Students must complete all the steps in order to receive credit for summer reading. Taking a quiz only will result in ZERO credit. Students will have to visit the Newsela.com website and create an account if they do not already have one. They should use their first and last name as their username, not a nickname or username that the teacher will not recognize. They should also choose a password that they will remember, such as their DCSS computer password or their birth date. After creating their user profile, the students can then enter the class code to access the articles the teacher has assigned. The class code for 2019-2020 10th-12th Grade Summer Reading class is S4S5KP. There will be many assignments in the Newsela Summer Reading Challenge for High Schools, so students will have plenty of articles to choose from. Students are only required to complete SIX of the assignments, but of course, they can do more. If the student does not do well on one of their chosen assignments, they can choose one of the other assignments to take the place of the one they did poorly on. The six highest grades will be averaged to determine their summer reading grade.
